Renewable Matching Coverage Calculator

Calculate what % of electricity your renewable instruments cover—and generate safe, copy-ready claim language.

Educational only. Public claims should be reviewed by legal/compliance. Evidence and methodology matter.

Processed in-browser. Nothing is stored.

Inputs

Total kWh for the reporting period

Total kWh of RECs, PPAs, or equivalent

e.g., 2024 or FY2024

If no, a disclosure note will be added

e.g., 'US operations only' or 'Region A'

Results

Enter inputs and click Calculate

How to use this tool

  1. 1Enter your annual electricity consumption (kWh) for the period.
  2. 2Enter the renewable instrument quantity (kWh) for the same period.
  3. 3Indicate whether the instrument period matches the reporting year.
  4. 4Add a scope note if coverage only applies to a subset (e.g., specific region).
  5. 5Review coverage % and copy the suggested language.

What the results mean

Coverage % is only as good as your:

  • Consumption dataset (kWh) — completeness and accuracy
  • Instrument evidence — quantity, period, and documentation

If period/vintage doesn't match, you should disclose that limitation in your claims.

Example (sanity check)

If consumption = 1,000,000 kWh and instruments = 600,000 kWh:

Coverage = 600,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 60%

Common pitfalls

  • Claiming portfolio-wide coverage when only some sites are covered
  • Using instruments that don't match the reporting period (without disclosure)
  • Not maintaining an evidence inventory
  • Confusing marketing language with auditable language
