Category 8 Starter Kit: Upstream Leased Assets (Lessee)

If you are the tenant: build a leased-space roster, get utility data, and document assumptions

Scope 3, Made PracticalCoreStarter Kit45 min

What you'll accomplish

  • Build a roster of leased locations where you are the tenant
  • Determine utility responsibility and data access pathways
  • Collect or estimate electricity usage with evidence links
  • Produce a defensible Cat 8 baseline (and a plan to improve)

Quick start (45 minutes)

  • List leased locations (Template 1)
  • For each location: who pays utilities and who controls the data
  • Request utility data from landlord if needed (Template 2)
  • Store evidence links and label data quality (Measured/Allocated/Proxy)

Templates included

Template 1 — Lessee Leased Space Roster

| Location | Address | Lease term | Utilities paid by | Data holder | Metering | Data pathway | Owner | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Template 2 — Landlord Data Request Email

Subject: Request: electricity usage data (kWh) for leased space — [Address], [Period]

Hi [Name],
We lease space at [address]. For internal reporting, can you provide electricity usage for [period]:
- billing period start/end dates
- kWh usage
- evidence (bill PDF or portal export)

If the building is master-metered, an allocation method summary is acceptable for now.
Thanks,
[Name]

Template 3 — Allocation Method Note (if master-metered)

Allocation method used:
- Basis (rentable area / submeter / other)
- Inputs used and evidence
- Why this method is reasonable
- Plan to improve (metering or better data)

Common pitfalls

  • Confusing Cat 8 with Scope 2 (depends on control and reporting boundary)
  • No documentation of allocation rules
  • No plan to improve proxies
